US Club Soccer: National Cup XVI West Regionals

US Club Soccer: National Cup XVI West Regionals

Three determined So Cal Rush teams set out to Davis on June 9 to start their journey towards a National team title. The G00’s led by Coach Mark Coombs, G01’s led by Coach Ramo Badohoun, and B00 Top Drawer team led by Coach Ramo and Coach Anthony Munoz; all prepared and worked hard towards a successful outcome. Each team competed against talented teams within the western region, as well as weather elements. Thunderstorms affected teams on Sunday with interrupted games and postponements. Both Rush teams affected by the weather, G00’s and B00’s, pulled out ties in difficult conditions.

Rush players and families demonstrated the Rush core value of “Unity” throughout the weekend in Davis. There was a “Rush Game of the Day” for each of the three teams in which the entire club attended the game to offer support, positive energy, and encouragement. Teams also dined together and players shared rooms to continue building on unity. Another great source of unity was found on the B00 Top Drawer team which consisted of players from the B04, B03, B02, B01, and B00 teams! Because the team was multi-aged, unity, as well as the core value of leadership, was absolutely essential! The older players served as mentors to the younger players and led by example. When teams celebrate success, share challenges, and encourage each other-- or demonstrate unity-- anything is possible!

In the end, the So Cal Rush G01’s advanced to the finals! They finished in first place coming out of the cross-pool play earning the maximum of 9 points with 13 goals for and 2 against. They advanced to the championship game against a local Sacramento team, Union FC G01.

Although Rush delivered extreme pressure throughout the entire first half of the game, including countless corner kicks and shots, Union FC found a way to hold off the continuous attack with an excellent defensive strategy. The halftime score held at 0-0. The Rush pressure continued in the second half and as the clock wound down, thoughts of extra time and the dreaded pk tie breaker loomed on the horizon. With ten minutes remaining, the G01’s penetrated the Union FC defense and scored! Once the first goal was scored, the Union defense unraveled and Rush scored two more additional goals to conclude with a 3-0 win! The G01’s secured the US Club Soccer National Cup XVI West Regional Championship! The next stop: Westfield, Indiana from July 21-24 to claim the US Club Soccer National Cup XVI title! The G01’s will bring the 11 Rush core values; including passion, unity, and tenacity; to secure the National title in July! National Cup… here comes the determined SO CAL RUSH G01’s!
